This book is a practical guide for any lay or professional minister or seminarian who wants to become more competent in providing spiritual (pastoral) care within a congregation or institutional setting. Through the use of personal stories, spiritual care theory, Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) methodology, and his experience as an educator and practitioner, Joel Hempel offers concrete ways to be helpful to those we serve. The book is rich in empowerment, grace, and encouragement, with a hefty dose of challenge. It will provide practical advice on how to handle real-life problems that a spiritual caregiver will encounter. The reader will also be invited to identify his or her healed and unhealed psychological and emotional wounds that impact ministry, and to clarify their living faith, which undergirds spiritual care. Spiritual Care Basics and Beyond also addresses important questions such as: What is spiritual care, and who needs it? How does a minister assess what the other person needs? What do you do when you get in over your head or mess up? What about sensitive subjects such as confrontation and boundaries? And the most important question: How do you grow in trusting the guidance of the Holy Spirit?

“In clear, concise, and accessible language, Joel Hempel offers a guide to pastoral care that speaks to ministry professionals and laypersons alike. It is a well-researched guide that provides practical guidance on the care of souls. Highly recommended!”

—John Allen, ACPE certified educator, SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital

“Joel Hempel writes with clarity grounded in empathy, wisdom, and love of service to others in the Spirit of Christ. His years of theological training, combined with hands-on personal experience in the care and counseling of others in times of crisis, make this book both an essential guide to ministry and a gift of love to those in ministry.”

—Edward Arle, fellow, American Association of Pastoral Counselors

Spiritual Care Basics and Beyond sets out to be a practical guide for neophyte and seasoned ministers in spiritual and pastoral care fields, and it accomplishes more. It stands as a testament of the steadfast work demanded of the spiritual/pastoral minister for building pastoral competencies, attending to one’s own healing, and laboring toward spiritual integration. Part professional wisdom, part memoir, part witness to faith, this is a work of four decades of intentional reflection and integration.”

—Carolyn A. Wright, assistant professor of pastoral theology, Aquinas Institute of Theology

Spiritual Care Basics and Beyond addresses Paul’s outline for spiritual care in Ephesians 4:11: leaders in Christ’s church are to ‘equip the saints for the work of ministry.’ Joel Hempel’s book is a unique, effective, and important tool to help leaders in the church carry out their ministry. Every pastor should take this book to heart.”

—Robert Scudieri, president, Mission Nation Publishing

Joel Hempel has an MA in pastoral counseling from the Athenaeum of Ohio and an MDiv from Concordia Theological Seminary. He is an emeritus ACPE educator and certified pastoral counselor with the American Association of Pastoral Counselors. Previously a pastor in the LCMS, Hempel now serves as a writer, teacher, and director of deacons in his home congregation. He has been married to Marcia for five and a half decades, and together they have two sons, a daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren.
