Overview

In Baptists and the Christian Tradition, editors Matthew Emerson, Christopher Morgan and Lucas Stamps compile a series of essays advocating “Baptist catholicity.” This approach presupposes a critical, but charitable, engagement with the whole church, both past and present, along with the desire to move beyond the false polarities of an Enlightenment-based individualism on the one hand and a pastiche of postmodern relativism on the other.

This is an excellent book and does not disappoint. Top Baptist scholars of today have captured the heritage of Baptists as a tradition. This is written by Southern Baptist scholars. Even though my Baptist heritage is different stemming from an early English General Baptist (modern Free Will Baptist) point of view I have highly benefitted from this book. I own both the print edition and the Logos edition. I bought the Logos edition to have access to it for research and writing. If you are serious about your Baptist heritage you need to read this book. Or, if you are thinking of abandoning the Baptist tradition for more liturgical traditions read this book. You might be surprised by how Baptists have traditionally appreciated the ancient Christian tradition. Toward Baptist renewal!
