The year of the COVID pandemic was a time like no other in modern history. A historical pandemic, a racial reckoning, a tense and bitterly divided political election, an insurrection at the capital, and the Texas record freeze created a year that will be long remembered. Preachers were charged with making some sense of what was happening and at the same time giving hope that the community would make it through this time together. Through a year of homilies based on the Catholic readings of Sundays and Feast days, Father David Garcia connects the stories of this historic year to the light of Scripture. The homilies weave human experiences with Hispanic culture and traditions as well as moral lessons and Catholic spirituality. Pandemic Preaching helps inspire all who have been through this difficult time with powerful stories and sound theological reflection. At the same time these writings challenge us to learn the lessons of this unique and difficult year for ourselves.
“Father David Garcia is widely admired for homilies that bring
the light of God’s word to both dark and joyful times, everyday
occurrences and life-altering events. Pandemic Preaching
inspires us to grow in faith amidst the new realities that COVID-19
has unleashed in our lives.”
—Timothy Matovina, Professor, University of Notre Dame
“This collection of well-crafted homilies was a creative
and profound way for Father David to offer pastoral care to a
community practicing physical/social distancing during a pandemic.
It created a sense of connection/community to recipients and helped
us move into a future full of hope that God has promised.”
—Sally T. Gomez-Jung, Professor emerita, Oblate School of
Theology
“Father David Garcia has commendably used his time as he began
retirement during a COVID-19 year to reflect fruitfully on the
Sunday readings, with one eye on the challenging times which we
were all experiencing. In these homilies it is evident that Father
David lives in the Word, Jesus, and walks with God’s people. Each
homily invites a gracious encounter with the mystery of Jesus in
the Eucharist.”
—Michael Boulette, Auxiliary Bishop, Archdiocese of San
Antonio
