Overview

Read by the author.

Rediscover your purpose and passion for life as bestselling author John Mark Comer guides you through the Bible’s vision for work, rest, and living fully human.

We’ve all heard it said: It’s who you are that matters, not what you do. Really? Where do the Scriptures teach that? After all, from the very first pages of the Bible, human beings were made to rule over and care for the earth. By calling and by commission, humanity was created to do good work.

In Garden City, pastor and New York Times bestselling author John Mark Comer will help you discover that, ultimately, what you do matters just as much as who you are. You will explore answers to questions like,

  • Does God care where I work?
  • Does he have a clear direction for me?
  • How can I create a rhythm for work and a practice of rest?

This book isn’t about how to get ahead in your career or spruce up your resume—it’s about working, resting, and living a full existence. It’s about spiritual life invading all of life.

John Mark Comer

John Mark is teacher and writer living in Topanga Canyon in LA with his wife T and their three kids.

For nearly two decades, he was the founding pastor at Bridgetown Church in Portland, Oregon. He spent many years working out discipleship to Jesus in the post-Christian West.

In 2021, after leading a five-year initiative around spiritual formation called “Practicing the Way,” he stepped away from his role to create simple, beautiful formation resources for church communities around the world.

Today, he is developing new practices, courses, and podcasts for Practicing the Way and serving as Teacher in Residence at Vintage Church LA.

He is also the New York Times bestselling author of seven books, including: Practicing the Way, the bestselling The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, and Live No Lies, God Has a Name, and Garden City.

He holds a master’s degree in Biblical and Theological Studies from Western Seminary, but these days, you’ll find him out walking the oak groves of the Santa Monica mountains working on his next project.
