Overview

A Scripture Index to Rabbinic Literature is a comprehensive Scripture index that catalogs approximately 90,000 references to the Bible found in classical rabbinic literature. This literature comprises two categories: (1) Talmudic literature (i.e., the Mishnah and related works) and (2) midrashic literature (i.e., biblical commentary).

Each rabbinic reference includes a hard citation following SBL Handbook of Style, the page number where the reference can be found in a standard English edition, and an indication of whether the biblical reference is a direct citation, allusion, or editorial reference. This incredibly handy reference work is the first of its kind and is a welcome addition to Hendrickson’s well-crafted line of reference books.

  • Provides a comprehensive Scripture index to classical rabbinic literature in English
  • Features references to the Mishnah, the Tosefta, the Jerusalem Talmud, and the Babylonian Talmud, as well as the Mekilta, Midrash Rabbah, Pirqe Rabbi Eliezer, and many more
  • Includes a hard citation, a page number in a standard English edition, and an indication of whether the biblical reference is a direct citation, allusion, or editorial reference

While this resource highlights the rabbinic resources not yet carried by Faithlife, it is a major step forward in the usefulness of the resources that are available. The scriptural references are tagged so that a search on a Bible reference works. What previous reviewers are complaining about is the lack of a Bible index. This means you must use a Collection section in a Guide to obtain results. I would like to see this resource folded into the Ancient Literature guide section.

I fully agree with the previous review. Excellent resource, but unfortunately, it does not work in sync with biblical texts and commentaries. I added it to "cited by" and searched Gen 1. It shows only a reference to Gen 1:1–5, incidentally mentioned in the introduction. I had great expectations about this resource, but without a complete indexation, it won't be as helpful as it could be.

The resource is great addition for anyone interested in how the OT was received in early Judaism and Christianity. I hope it stands as another reason for Logos to acquire more rabbinic literature! My main criticism is that this resource would be best hyperlinked and constructed like a commentary (with milestones for each biblical reference) so that it can automatically scroll with biblical texts. Given that a large portion of the OT is covered (as well as a few NT passages) it would be great if it could be made part of a link-set so that it would track with other texts.
