Overview

The closely related biblical themes of covenant and law have often been debated. Yet they are among the most important topics in Scripture—theologically and practically. They address how God graciously relates to us and how we ought to live on a daily basis.

In this ESBT volume, Brandon Crowe builds on previous books in the series as he considers covenant and law throughout both Old and New Testaments. The Path of Faith lays out key principles such as the obligation of people to obey their Creator, how Jesus’ perfect obedience to God’s law opens the way to eternal life, and what the law means for us today as we continue walking by faith.

The Path of Faith reveals the unity of the biblical witness and the consistent call for God’s people to show him covenant loyalty, all while recognizing the unique saving work of Christ on our behalf.

Essential Studies in Biblical Theology (ESBT), edited by Benjamin L. Gladd, explore the central or “essential” themes of the Bible’s grand storyline. Taking cues from Genesis 1-3, authors explore the presence of these themes throughout the entire sweep of redemption history. Written for students, church leaders, and laypeople, the ESBT offers an introduction to biblical theology.

Top Highlights

“Biblical covenants can be defined as elected (as opposed to natural) relationships of obligation, typically ratified by an oath, that include blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience.” (Page 3)

“The warning passages echo the Old Testament, illustrating the continuity between the old and new covenant communities. In both cases, the covenant community is a mixed community—it includes both true believers and unbelievers. The danger of unbelief within the community persists (see Heb 3:19). Though Jesus eradicated the dichotomy between obedience and sacrifice, that dichotomy persists in the covenant community in this age. In other words, the warning passages in Hebrews are covenantal warnings for God’s covenant people.” (Pages 146–147)

“By submitting to John’s baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, Jesus responds appropriately to the prophetic call of repentance and shows solidarity with the people he came to save. John recognizes that Jesus has no need for his baptism, but it is fitting for Jesus to participate in it as part of his task to fulfill all righteousness (Mt 3:13–15).1 Jesus is not a sinner, but he came to save sinners. Jesus is baptized as a representative who acts on behalf of his people.” (Page 103)

“The Prophets consistently remind God’s people of God’s goodness to them and of their covenantal obligations, and they reprove them for their failure to walk according to the law of God.” (Page 79)

“God’s people are redeemed in order that they might obey” (Page 117)
