Overview

A compilation of apocryphal Christian texts, many translated into English for the first time, with comprehensive introductions.

This second volume of New Testament Apocrypha continues the work of the first by making available to English readers more apocryphal texts. Twenty-nine texts are featured, including The Adoration of the Magi and The Life of Mary Magdalene, each carefully introduced, copiously annotated, and translated into English by eminent scholars. These fascinating texts provide insights into the beliefs, expressions, and practices of a range of Christian communities from the early centuries through late antiquity and into the medieval period.

Another fascinating collection of Pseudepigrapha, which I often feel is more akin to Christian Fiction. Rather than Gnostic works, these are far more orthodox-adjacent, and many of them were no doubt conveniently “discovered” when needed for the dedication of a new church or festival. Thus they give good insight into those times - plus show us how some of the confusion that abounded on the middle to late Middle Ages. I also appreciated that a number of these works were from the latter half of the first millennium. Once again I appreciated the introduction to each work, as well as the very readable English translations. Quality and usefulness of footnotes do vary between authors, but their presence is welcome. Also the extensive Bibliography for each item is to be applauded. I thought the standout entry was in fact the last one - The Teaching of the Apostles. Nice to have an entry under Church Orders.
