Overview

In this course on the doctrine of grace (TH268), Jack W. Cottrell will help you dive deep into the biblical and theological underpinnings of the topic of grace. “Grace” is a word we use often as Christians; however, as a theological concept it is often underdeveloped and misunderstood. Dr. Cottrell will help you develop a robust understanding of grace as he guides you in an exploration of the attributes of grace in relation to the law, key passages of Scripture, and the contributions of historical figures who helped develop the doctrine of grace. Dr. Cottrell demonstrates how a proper understanding of grace applies to and changes your life.

Top Highlights

“If you don’t get this distinction between the law system and the grace system, you’ll never really understand this passage, and you’ll never understand grace. The law system means how you can get into heaven in relation to God as your Creator and your lawgiver. The grace system is how you get into heaven in relation to God as your redeemer.” (source)

“Here’s an illustration from a book by Fritz Ridenour called How to Be a Christian without Being Religious. In the introduction to this book, he says, ‘Christianity is more than a religion because every religion has one basic characteristic. Its followers are trying to reach God, find God, please God through their own efforts. Religions reach up toward God. Christianity is God reaching down to man.… Christianity claims that men have not found God, but God has found them. To some that’s a crushing blow. They prefer religious effort—dealing with God on their own terms. This puts them in control. They feel good about ‘being religious.’ Christianity, however, [this is Ridenour still talking] is not religious striving. To practice Christianity is to respond to what God has done for you.’” (source)

“Here, everything we do is done first and foremost for the glory of God. This is what it means to be theocentric. Everything we do is for the glory of God. As 1 Cor 10:31 says, ‘Whether then you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.’ See especially Matt 6:33, which says, in the words of Jesus, ‘Seek first the kingdom of God.’ And here, the word ‘kingdom’ means ‘kingship,’ ‘lordship,’ ‘dominion.’ This means our primary goal, even in seeking salvation, is to please God and honor Him as Lord of our lives. We want to be saved for God’s sake.” (source)
