SPCK’s “A Month With” series offers an excellent starting point for diving into the writings, sayings, and stories of some of the church’s greatest thinkers and holiest saints. Each title provides 62 reflections (one for the morning and one for the evening) which give a snapshot of the wisdom of these towering spiritual figures. After spending a month with each of these individuals, you will be enriched and encouraged by their example and by their profound insights into what it means to follow Jesus Christ.
This series helps us to be properly nurtured by the living, radical Christian tradition of faith.
—Mark Oakley, author and chancellor of St Paul’s Cathedral, London
Julian of Norwich was a 14th century mystic who was renowned for her spiritual wisdom, even in her own day. This set of 62 reflections are taken from her book Revelations in Divine Love, which is the first book known to have been written by a woman in the English language. Her book was the fruit of several mystical encounters with Christ whereby she speaks of Jesus’ immense love for us and his presence with us in the midst of suffering.
St. Augustine is one of the most celebrated, influential and prolific writers of the early church. Arguably his most famous work is his autobiographical Confessions. This book collects some of the key passages of Augustine’s Confessions—along with passages from some of Augustine’s other writings—and provides 62 passages for daily reflection.
There are few figures in Christian history that captivate and inspire as much as St. Francis of Assisi. Sometimes called a “mirror of Christ” for the way in which he wholeheartedly modeled his life after Jesus, stories abound of the holiness of this “little friar” and his way with nature. In this book, we see many of these stories as relayed in the 14th century collection of sayings and stories about St. Francis, The Little Flowers of Saint Francis. These 62 reflections provide much to contemplate for how we can live as Christ did in our world today.
St. Teresa of Avila was a mystic and reformer who helped to reform the Carmelite religious order through her personal holiness and keen insights on the spiritual life. She composed several enduring classics on prayer and spirituality that have edified and enriched countless people in the centuries since. These 62 excerpts from four of her most famous works will take you on a guided meditation for living a life of prayer. Filled with spiritual depth and practical wisdom, St. Teresa’s words are as relevant to us today as they were to the people of her time.
