Overview

This collection of essays deals with the timeless issues of the ineffable glory of the grace of God and the dependence of sinners on unalloyed mercy. The various authors—including Thomas R. Schreiner, Mark DeVine, and Thomas Ascol—also address a highly contemporary conflict in Southern Baptist life over the character of this very mercy.

“God foreknows, elects, and causes to be born again those who will be saved on the last day” (Page 189)

“Heaven is rejoicing that He bought us ‘from every tribe and tongue and people and nation’ (verse 9). This text does not say He redeemed everyone in every tribe, tongue, people, and nation. If that were so, the whole world would be saved. The fact is, a perfectly just God cannot require a double payment for the same sin. If Jesus has already paid the ransom for everyone’s sin at the cross, then no one would go to hell. If purchased sinners did go to hell, God would cease to be righteous, something that is clearly impossible (1 John 1:9).” (Page 13)

“To the contrary, when He died upon the cross, Jesus did business directly and exclusively with the Father. This was an inter-Trinitarian transaction between the Father and the Son by which the Son paid the definite price to secure the salvation of all who would believe upon Him. Jesus Christ bought His people with His shed blood (Acts 20:28). This Lamb gave His life for His sheep (John 10:11, 15).” (Page 12)

“We may define election as follows: Election is the sovereign act of God before the foundation of the earth by which he chooses a certain number of people to be the special objects of his grace resulting in their eternal salvation, not based on any foreseen merit or faith on their part but simply because of His good pleasure.” (Page 41)

“Does God act alone effectually to call and regenerate the dead and passive sinner from death to new life, causing the sinner to respond in faith and repentance (i.e., monergism)?” (Page 120)
