Overview

An ardent opponent of liberalism and a defender of orthodoxy, Martyn Lloyd-Jones’ legacy is still felt today throughout the Protestant world. This collection of nine previously unpublished sermons, originally delivered during his final visit to the United States, challenges us to reevaluate the focus of our lives and the object of our affections. Covering topics such as prayer, evangelism, and the church, this anthology fosters a spirit of renewed devotional fervor.

“But I think the ultimate explanation of these men is that they are so certain of the death of our Lord that they have forgotten all about the resurrection.” (Page 73)

“The apostle does not say these things are light in and of themselves. That is not what he says at all. What he says is that they become light when contrasted with something else. Listen to him: ‘For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.’” (Page 24)

“I am not prepared to accept the test of orthodoxy as the acid test of one’s Christian profession for this reason: as we know from history, perhaps some of us from personal experience, it is quite possible to be perfectly orthodox and yet to be spiritually dead.” (Page 13)

“We are so aware of the problems, so immersed in them, that we have forgotten all of the glory that is around us and have seen nothing but the problems that lead to this increasing dejection. That is my analysis of these men on the road to Emmaus.” (Page 76)

“The world is full of idolatry. Wealth. Sex. Prosperity. These are the things for which people are living. They are thrilled by them. They are moved by them. Their whole lives are governed by them.” (Page 116)

In 1929, Lloyd-Jones went to London where he was appointed the associate pastor of Westminster Chapel working alongside G. Campbell Morgan. This ministry lasted for 30 years until Lloyd-Jones retired in 1968. He also served at Inter-Varsity Fellowship of Students which is known today as the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship.
