Overview

In this collection, Sam Storms draws upon 38 years of experience as a professor, a pastor, and an author to provide accessible and insightful commentaries, as well as general Bible reading tips. For every book of the Bible covered here, he includes detailed introductions, personal commentaries, and suggestions for further reading; for Psalms, Corinthians, and Revelations, he also includes guides for daily devotions and meditations. Through this series of hundreds of articles, Storms helps readers get more out of the Bible by giving interpretive clues and discussing controversial issues such as divorce and remarriage, infant deaths, the power of demons, and more. In this volume, Storms gives an introduction to the book of Romans, commentary on the book, and a bibliography of other available commentaries.

Top Highlights

“Predestination points to the decision God made of what He intended to do with those whom He foreknew” (source)

“As Schreiner notes, ‘the reason believers are not under condemnation is because they have been freed from the tyranny of the law, for sin exercises dominion over those under the law’” (Romans 8:1)

“not because of a physical defect but because of a moral refusal” (source)

“Thus a Christian has been saved from the penalty of sin, is being saved from the power of sin, and will be saved from the presence of sin. Each of these tenses of salvation has a theological name: salvation in the past from the penalty of sin is Justification, salvation in the present from the power of sin is Sanctification, and salvation in the future from the presence of sin is Glorification. Justification is past and positional. Sanctification is present and progressive. Glorification is prospective and permanent. Justification is how God sees us in Christ. Sanctification is what we are in daily experience. Glorification is what we shall be in heaven. Justification is something done for us. Sanctification is something done in us. Glorification is something done to us.” (Romans 6:1–23)

“The technical name for this argument is a fortiori, i.e., reasoning from the greater to the lesser. If the greater task was for God to send his Son to die for us while we were his enemies, how much easier is it for him to save us now that we are his friends! If Christ died for us when we hated him, how much more shall he live for us now that we are his friends! If God loved us as much as he did while we were helpless, sinful and ungodly, how much more shall he love us now that by his grace we are justified, righteous in Christ, adopted as children, reconciled to his heart!” (Romans 5:10)
