Overview

One of the most studied books in the Bible, the Book of Revelation is a challenging and mysterious work. Butler dedicates almost two hundred pages examining and explaining each verse and chapter, providing historical context and great insight into John’s prophesies. Butler is expert at organizing each chapter into distinctive segments, formulating an easy system to study Revelation’s complicated structure. With each chapter beginning with a helpful introduction and his employment of unadorned language, Butler has made this complex work accessible for anyone.

“The word ‘Smyrna’ comes from a Hebrew word meaning ‘bitter’ (Strauss). The meaning fit the experience of the believers. Satan tried very hard to make the lives of the believers in Smyrna bitter with much persecution.” (Page 370)

“righteousness would be vindicated and wickedness punished” (Page 411)

“His doxology. ‘To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen’ (Revelation 1:6). This is sort of a summation of the praise. First, the splendor in the doxology. ‘To him be glory.’ The splendor for Christ will be greater than that for anyone else. Second, the sovereignty in the doxology. ‘Dominion.’ We have already seen in Revelation 1:5 that Christ is over all in rule and authority. Third, the season of the doxology. ‘For ever and ever.’ The praise will never cease. Fourth, the sureness of the doxology. ‘Amen.’ This is an affirmation that says the exaltation of Christ will indeed occur.” (Pages 359–360)

“Repentance is not just words, it is also works—returning to holy conduct neglected by sin. True repentance leads to return of holy conduct.” (Page 368)

“There is no arrow with the bow. This is the key to the character of this evil. The conquering will be bloodless. It will be done through propaganda. In the end times people will be conditioned to believing a lie. Because people have refused the truth, ‘God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie’ (2 Thessalonians 2:11). We are seeing that end-time condition foreshadowed in our day by the lying manipulations of political leaders and news media and the gullibility of the populace to believe the obvious lies. When you witness the belief of many Americans of the lies of politicians and news media, one has no difficulty believing the end-time condition of gullibility when evil leaders will deceive multitudes through their propaganda.” (Page 415)
