Overview

John G. Butler’s Analytical Bible Expositor commentaries are comprehensively organized, chapter-by-chapter and verse-by-verse. These invaluable works are much more accessible than typical commentaries, because they are free from heavy intellectual arguments and the difficult-to-understand language which is characteristic of many commentaries. The author treats each chapter of the Bible as a unit. From this starting point, he outlines the chapter and analyzes each verse. Expository in style, these commentaries present both the meaning and the message of the Scripture. The annotations of the text combine explanation with real-world application. This helpful series will be a valuable aid for both the preacher and teacher, helping them to understand the Scripture and providing a wealth of useful sermon and lesson outlines.

“‘He is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world’ (1 John 2:2). The word translated ‘propitiation’ means ‘appeasing’ (Thayer). It is the work of expiation for the sinner through the work of Calvary. The reason Christ can take care of the sin problem is that He has satisfied God, by His sacrifice on the cross, for the punishment of our sins. ‘Jesus is the propitiation for our sins.” (Pages 283–284)

“The Scriptures were given to promote holiness. Many books are written to promote evil, but the Word of God is written to promote righteousness. ‘Thy Word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee’ (Psalm 119:11). If you want a holy life, be much in the Holy Book.” (Page 283)

“When Christ pleads for the forgiveness and purging of the sinner, God will grant it. Christ has never lost a case before the Great Judge.” (Page 284)

“Strengthen thou me according unto thy word’ (Psalm 119:28). ‘Be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might’ (Ephesians 6:10).” (Page 287)

“Walking in the light means to adjust your behavior according to the light of Divine revelation.” (Page 281)
