Overview

Expanded from Fred Malone’s earlier work, A String of Pearls Unstrung, this text offers a covenantal argument for credobaptism versus paedobaptism. In this thorough study on baptism, Malone offers a helpful analysis and summation of the Baptist position that the Bible authorizes only credobaptism—the baptism of disciples alone.

“‘The New which was in the Old concealed finally has been revealed by the New, explaining in a final authoritative way how it was concealed in the Old.’” (Page 44)

“To summarize, there is a limit to the practice of good and necessary consequence in its application. The limitation is this: inference cannot contradict other instituted Scripture or sound hermeneutical principles that govern one’s deductions from Scripture. For sacraments in particular, under the regulative principle of worship, good and necessary consequence cannot be used to institute any sacrament or the subjects of sacraments.” (Page 20)

“It is my belief that the regulative principle of worship, stated so clearly in the Presbyterian Westminster Confession of Faith and 1689 London Baptist Confession, requires instituted revelation to authorize infant baptism, not by silence or inference. Because no such revelation exists, infant baptism is a violation of the regulative principle of worship.” (Page xiv)

“Murray’s dependence upon good and necessary inference as sufficient to institute infant baptism, together with his declaration that it is indefensible to demand an express command or explicit instance to justify the practice, are errors in his hermeneutics. Murray fails to recognize that New Testament sacraments must be expressly commanded and explicitly instituted by Christ according to the regulative principle of worship (John 4:20–24).” (Page 18)

“Finally, Covenantal paedobaptists and Baptists both believe that the New Covenant of Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the Abrahamic Covenant and is the clearest and final fulfillment of the historical Covenant of Grace. The New Covenant administration is therefore the fulfillment of that eternal Covenant of Redemption to save God’s elect people (2 Timothy 1:8–10).” (Page 52)
