For nearly 30 years, the Journal of Biblical Counseling (previously the Journal of Pastoral Practice) of CCEF (the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation) has provided a forum for biblical counseling’s development and application. The journal’s mission is to develop clear thinking and effective practice in biblical counseling through articles that faithfully bring the God of truth, mercy, and power to the issues faced by ministries of counseling and discipleship.
“Discouragement is sin, because it is a failure to live by faith (Deut. 1:32; Rom. 14:23). It is an unwillingness to view one’s circumstances from the divine perspective. Basically then, discouragement is a sinful state of mind which fails to biblically adjust to disappointments. Its symptoms are those of depression, a downness, and a tendency to retreat and become occupied with inconsequential things.” (Page 29)
“The basic meaning of the Greek word homologeo (‘confess’) is to say (lego) the same (homo) thing.39 In other words, true biblical confession is not just saying, ‘sorry about that.’ It means to agree with the one I have offended that my offense is as serious to me as it is to him.” (Pages 46–47)
“Biblical repentance, then, is a spiritual change of mind that results in a change of action.” (Page 50)
“Biblical faith is more than intellectual consent and certainly more than a leap into the dark contrary to all reason” (Page 52)
“unconfessed sin is the major cause of guilt-conflicts, depression, and psychosomatic illnesses” (Page 47)
