“Until thou reward me, for the glory of the resurrection was nothing other than the reward for the most blessed passion. Paul says of this reward: For which cause God has exalted him, and has given him a name which is above all names: that in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus is in the glory of God the Father.23 The word until denotes the period of three days, after which the devotion of the just rejoiced at His resurrection. This was certainly bestowed on the Lord Christ uniquely in the humanity which He assumed; His resurrection strengthened the hearts of the just.” (Pages 403–404)

“When a debtor cannot pay a debt, his creditor obtains a warrant from the judge, and enters his debtor’s house. There he plunders all that he can lay hands on, and obtains satisfaction for the money which was borrowed. In the same way the devil, after concentrating many sins in men which adhere to them through their unbending will, obtains power to plunder the substance of a person subject to him, and to have his fill of mutilating people according to his will. This is what is now sought for Judas, that he be left in the power of the devil and stripped of all his possessions.” (Page 107)

“So what is forbidden here is obedience to sin rather than the promptings which the flesh by its own powers cannot avoid.” (Page 177)

“Observe that their posture is midway; he says not that they are upright (this escapes the charge of arrogance), nor prostrate (this avoids the notion of a fall), but that they are sitting humbly, shedding devoted tears over the wicked waters of sins.” (Page 360)
