Overview

Luke 18–24 concludes The MacArthur New Testament Commentary’s look at the longest of the four Gospels. Luke is unique in its historical detail and for how it positions Jesus as the Savior-King not just of the Jews, but of all mankind. Chapters 18-24 follow Jesus as He enters Jerusalem, is tried and crucified, and is resurrected in victory.

Join John MacArthur as he explains each verse in a way that is both doctrinally precise and intensely practical. Taking into account the cultural, theological, and Old Testament contexts of each passage, MacArthur tackles interpretive challenges and fairly evaluates differing views, giving the reader confidence in his conclusions.

Top Highlights

“By not revealing Himself to them until after He explained the Scripture, Jesus modeled the principle that the power lies in the explanation of biblical truth, not in the person doing the explaining.” (Page 421)

“Palm branches symbolized victory, joy, and celebration.” (Page 95)

“It is impossible to overstate the monumental change these few simple phrases introduce. Christ’s words signaled the end of the Old Covenant, with its social, ceremonial, dietary, and Sabbath laws, and installed the New Covenant. With these words, Jesus marked the end of all the rituals and sacrifices, the priesthood, the holy place, and the Holy of Holies, the curtain of which God would soon split from top to bottom, throwing it wide open (Mark 15:38). All that the Old Covenant symbolism pointed toward would be fulfilled in the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Page 282)

“It is not enough merely to feel that Christianity is true, or even accept intellectually that it is. Feelings remove emotional barriers to experiencing the risen Christ; facts remove intellectual ones. But neither alone is sufficient to save. Only faith in the resurrection, ‘[confessing] with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and [believing] in your heart that God raised Him from the dead,’ will result in salvation, ‘for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation’ (Rom. 10:9–10).” (Page 415)

“The story of Zaccheus’s conversion is one of the clearest biblical illustrations of God seeking a specific sinner. That man, in the midst of a massive crowd, had a divine appointment with the seeking, saving Lord. Jesus located him, called him by name, and pursued him to salvation.” (Page 69)
