Baptism & Gifts of the Holy Spirit
- Author: Merril C. Unger
- Publisher: Moody Publishers, 1974
- 192 pages
Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5
The charismatic movement, with its emphasis on Spirit baptism and the manifestation of the gifts of the Spirit, has become one of the most prominent features of twentieth-century Christianity.
In Baptism and Gifts of the Holy Spirit, Dr. Unger traces the doctrine of the baptism of the Spirit through the New Testament. In the final two chapters he puts the doctrine into its proper place with respect to spiritual gifts and the experiences of the Holy Spirit's power for Christian living.
Since a great danger of the charismatic movement lies in its understanding of the nature of Christian maturity, Dr. Unger points out that true maturity is achieved only in day-by-day obedience, Bible study, and prayer.
Merrill F. Unger was professor of Old Testament at Dallas Theological Seminary until his retirement in 1965. He was the author of Unger's Bible Handbook, Unger's Bible Dictionary, and Unger's Commentary on the Old Testament. Dr. Unger died in 1980.
This work cannot be read without a clearer understanding of this aspect of the Spirit's ministry and especially a new appreciation for the gracious salvation which is ours through simple faith. —Robert L. Saucy, Talbot Theological Seminary |

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5
The Ten Commandments. No other document has done more to shape the values of Western civilization. And yet, God's rules remain no less controversial today than when Moses presented his infamous stone tablets to the nation of Israel. Even now, their role in our courts and schools is under scrutiny and has sparked heated debate. But just as important as this public discussion is a more private question: How well do I live by the Ten Commandments?
To help you answer this question and better understand its public ramifications, author and pastor Michael Horton has written this comprehensive guide to the origin, significance, and social impact of God's rules for mankind. In it he weaves together theological truth and practical application to challenge readers to delve deeper into their understanding of what it means to live lives steeped in the wisdom of the Ten Commandments. With a foreword by distinguished scholar J.I. Packer, this is an insightful book you don't want to miss!

Where did the Bible come from? How do we know the right books are in the Bible? Does the Bible contain errors? What are the oldest copies we have of the Bible? How do we know that the Bible hasn't been changed over the years? Why are there so many translations of the Bible, and which one should I use?
These are just some of the important questions about the Bible that are discussed in this book.
Understanding basic facts about the origin of the Bible is essential for every Christian, but it can also be confusing and difficult. Here two well-known scholars explain simply and clearly these basic facts.
Inspiration, the biblical canon, major manuscripts, textual criticism, early translations, and modern versions are some of the major topics discussed. Careful explanations of important points are given throughout, as the entire field of biblical introduction is covered.
Clearly organized, this book is ideally suited for Bible study groups, Sunday school classes, and personal study. While writing for laymen without previous training, the authors do not gloss over difficult and complex issues when they arise. The nature of inspiration, the extent of the canon, and the usefulness of modern versions are all clearly discussed.

Mundane or motivational? Lackluster or lively? Redundant or reviving?
What words would describe your personal Bible study? Be honest. If you're like many people, you've probably felt at one time or another a twinge of guilt about not getting fully enjoyment out of personal Bible study time. You may wonder how some people can percolate with enthusiasm over the same passages you've read time and time again—unmoved. What's their secret? Howard Hendricks knows that the "secret" is really no secret at all. It is simply a case of practicing effective Bible study methods. But to practice them you must know them. And that's where Howard Hendricks and his son Bill can enlighten you and show you the steps to living by the Book.

Science and the Bible
- Author: Henry M. Morris
- Publisher: Moody Publishers, 1986
- 154 pages
Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5
The reliability of God's Word is under fire today. Man distrusts the Bible as an authoritative source of scientific information. Man, whether right or wrong, chooses to make his own discoveries and draw his own conclusions.
The Bible and Modern Science was first printed in 1946 and later revised. This current edition continues the tradition of comparing up-to-date scientific data with the infallible Word of God.
Rarely have there been more widespread and vicious attacks on biblical Christianity than there are today, and yet the scientific evidences for the divine origin and truth of the Bible have never been as clear as they are today.
Study scientific data and biblical truths in these five chapters:
- Science and the Bible
- The Theory of Evolution
- Science and the Flood
- The Bible and Ancient History
- Fulfilled Prophecy
Henry M. Morris is president of the Institute for Creation Research, San Diego, California. Science and the Bible is just one of his many books and articles on the Bible and science, creationism and evolution, and hydraulics. |
