John Charles Ryle
J. C. Ryle, the first Anglican bishop of Liverpool, was born in 1816 and died at the age of 84 years old in the year 1900. He was “an unusually effective preacher and communicater,” and wrote volumes of important works, including the 7-volume Expository Thoughts on the Gospels, Christian Leaders of the Last Century, and Holiness: Its Nature, Hindrances, Difficulties and Roots.
“When you read his book Holiness today, you get a real flavor for the kind of battle for holiness he fought.”
—John PiperHoliness by J. C. Ryle
Felt by many to be J. C Ryle's masterwork, Holiness has been challenging and encouraging Christians toward holiness for over a century. First exploring the nature of sin, sanctification, and holiness, Ryle then draws examples from the Scriptures to argue that professing one’s faith isn’t merely enough to live the true Christian life.

Get BookBrothers, We Are Not Professionals by John Piper
“We pastors are being killed by the professionalizing of the pastoral ministry. The mentality of the professional is not the mentality of the prophet. It is not the mentality of the slave of Christ. Professionalism has nothing to do with the essence and the heart of the Christian ministry. The more professional we long to be, the more spiritual death we will leave in our wake.”

Federal thinking is foreign to the modern mind. “Federal” has come to mean nothing more than centralized or big. Because our federal government has become so uncovenantal, it is not surprising that the original meaning of the word is lost. But federal thinking is the backbone of historic Protestant theology, and the Church needs to recover the covenantal understanding of federal headship.
