Oxford Latin Dictionary
Status: Under Development

Fifty years in the making, the Oxford Latin Dictionary is the first Latin-English dictionary based on a fresh reading of original sources. The Dictionary was published in eight fascicles between 1968 and 1982, when it was first made available in a single bound volume.

Now we're hoping to produce the first-ever electronic edition of OLD, containing all 40,000 entries and 2,150 pages of information invaluable for classicists, Latinists, and readers of the Vulgate worldwide.

The most comprehensive single volume dictionary for classical Latin. —Latin Therapy Group, University of Cambridge

This major achievement in lexicography is the most extensive and complete Latin dictionary available. It reflects a fresh and thorough reading of all the available literary, epigraphic and other original sources.

Indispensable for any serious, advanced study in Latin language or literature...American Reference Books Annual

The Oxford Latin Dictionary is a comprehensive and authoritative reference work for students, teachers, professionals, and general readers interested in classical language and literature, ancient history, medieval studies, languages, art history, ancient philosophy, religion, archaeology, law, medicine, and natural science.

The Oxford Latin Dictionary is a very special dictionary...I have found no ancient language dictionary which can compare to it in terms of organization, clarity and fullness of example sentences.Amazon reviewer

Benefits of the Logos Bible Software Edition

In print, this one-volume dictionary is massive: more than 8 pounds! It's about twice the height and width of a normal hardcover book, and it's thick. Open it up and the print, while readable, is quite small. Examples from Latin texts, in particular, are set in a typeface that's smaller than 8 points. The Logos Bible Software edition will fit on your hard drive, you'll be able to scale the text display size, and of course you'll be able to search the text instantly for any word or field.

The dictionary can also be set as a KeyLink destination for Latin text, which means you can double-click on a Latin word anywhere in your digital library and jump directly to that word's definition in the dictionary. If you already own the Dictionary of the Vulgate New Testament, you can promote it above OLD and the system will try to find a match in the more specialized dictionary before looking in OLD.

The dictionary is full of abbreviations (in fact, the "Aids to the Reader" section which lists them all runs to 14 printed pages!), but in the Logos edition discovering what an abbreviation means is as simple as passing your mouse over it. A tip window instantly appears with the explanation and disappears as you move the mouse away. This is ideal for the student who can effortlessly and instantly learn that sup. is supine (not superlative, which is superl.) while Sulp. Ruf. is Ser. Sulpicius Rufus.
