Overview
Bibliotheca Sacra is the oldest continuously published journal in the Western Hemisphere. Its stated purpose is to provide continuing biblical and theological instruction to biblical scholars, alumni, pastors, teachers, and serious lay Bible students. Articles focus on biblical exposition and current theological and ethical issues, periodical reviews, and book reviews relevant to those engaged in Christian ministries. This collection contains the volumes of Bibliotheca Sacra published between 1844 and 1933.
Since 1934, starting with volume 91, it has been published by Dallas Theological Seminary. But prior to that, it was published by:
- Andover Theological Seminary (1844-1883)
- Oberlin College (1884-1921)
- Xenia Theological Seminary (1922-1933)
These volumes are a fascinating resource for doing historical research. You can see how Bible scholars dealt with such events as Darwin's new books, slavery, World War I, and more. It's interesting to see that the cultural issues of their day and apologetics arguments of their day aren't so different from ours.
