Paul’s contrast in Romans 6 is between the justified person, who is a slave to righteousness (v. 18), and the unbeliever, who is a slave to sin (v. 17).” (Volume 6, Page 35)
“Since sin is not eradicated it will always produce conflict within the believer. The filling of the Holy Spirit does not lessen this conflict; on the contrary, he produces the conflict: ‘For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would’ (Gal 5:17). This normal conflict within all believers is described by Paul in Romans 7:14ff.” (Volume 6, Pages 43–44)
