Overview

Was our Lord's service social or redemptive? Does Christ not command social service to all men? Should we insist on justice because God is just, or deny our rights because God is longsuffering? How will the believer know which is the proper course of social action at a particular time? Should wealthy persons disperse their possessions?

Dr. Ryrie addresses these and other pertinent questions in his timely book on the Church's social responsibility.

Dr. Ryrie gives insight into how we can be both salt and light in today's world, talks about the personal priorities of Christ while on earth, and talks about our duties or responsibilities to all men as well as our civic responsibilities.

Understanding this book is a must for those who desire to determine the extent of their involvement in today's world. It is informative and challenging.

“Other responsibilities are part of our Christian duty, but they are not a part of Christian evangelism.” (Page 23)

“People get sidetracked when they attempt to impose kingdom ethics on the world today without the physical presence of the King. The Christian is responsible to practice church ethics, not kingdom ethics. Church ethics focus on the church; kingdom ethics focus on the world.” (Page 22)

“Some say that means that Godlike action on the part of Christians will be concerned with establishing justice in the world now: justice for the poor by dividing the wealth; justice for the oppressed by any means, including (in the opinion of some) violent revolution. Often cited as proof is Micah 6:8: ‘And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?’ But these are personal requirements, not programs for social action. To do justice is quite different from imposing justice. God’s righteous judgments are often delayed for higher purposes known only to Him. It is not necessarily the will of God to bring immediate justice to people.” (Page 30)

“If the content of the gospel is evangelism, then social responsibility is not a part of it. If the gospel includes obedience, following Christ, bringing in the kingdom or at least living kingdom ethics now, then social responsibilities will definitely be a part of the gospel message.” (Page 19)

“To love those outside the family of God (that is, to glorify God in their lives) means primarily to seek their salvation; for when a person is saved, he begins a display of the glory of God that will continue throughout all eternity (Ephesians 2:7).” (Page 29)
