Overview

Genesis—the Bible's account of human origins and the harbinger of human destiny—is a book teeming with critical questions. Who wrote it? When? Does the account of creation square with modern science? What about Adam and Eve? Derek Kidner not only provides a running exegetical commentary, but also lucidly handles the tough issues that Genesis raises. His clear prose and theological insight will expand readers' understanding of God's character and of human nature and destiny.

Top Highlights

“She took … and ate: so simple the act, so hard its undoing. God will taste poverty and death before ‘take and eat’ become verbs of salvation.” (Page 73)

“It is the serpent’s word against God’s, and the first doctrine to be denied is judgment.” (Page 72)

“To bless is to bestow not only a gift but a function” (Page 56)

“So the tempter pits his bare assertion against the word and works of God, presenting divine love as envy, service as servility, and a suicidal plunge as a leap into life, ‘All these things will I give thee …’; the pattern repeats in Christ’s temptations, and in ours.” (Page 73)

“The tempter begins with suggestion rather than argument. The incredulous tone—‘So God has actually said …?’—is both disturbing and flattering: it smuggles in the assumption that God’s word is subject to our judgment.” (Page 72)

The works of Derek Kidner (MA, Christ's College, Cambridge) are full of the marks of both professor and pastor with his evenhanded scholarship as well as his devotional insight. These qualities have made his commentaries in the Tyndale Old Testament Commentary series and The Bible Speaks Today series some of the most beloved and popular of recent decades. Kidner had a long career in both the church and the academy in England. He studied at Cambridge University and then served in the ministry for several years before becoming a senior tutor at Oak Hill Theological College. Kidner began his writing career while serving as warden of Tyndale House in Cambridge from 1964 to 1978, publishing his ninth and final book, The Message of Jeremiah, in 1987.

These reviews come from the viewpoint of a novice who is beginning to teach Sunday school. From what I understand this entire series is aimed at someone about my level and I'm thankful for it and the often low price that puts it in reach. This first volume seems to meet the needs of the layman well with solid information and some inspirational ideas that might be helpful when teaching. It uses understandable high school level language rather than the college level vocabulary that many commentaries aspire to. If you think of this book like the four parts of Genesis plus one for the introduction it is easier to 'grade'. The intro is very helpful whether thinking of the JEDP theory, the relation of Genesis 1 and science or looking forward to The Christ through the concepts of Genesis. The commentary on pre-history continues this trend. Sadly it all comes crashing down with a perfunctory and dull look at Abraham's life, but then rebounds for solid Jacob commentary. The final section on the Joseph story might be the high point of the volume as it recaptures or exceeds the level of the early part of the volume. I suspect this volume is pitched too low for experienced preachers or seminarians, but for a layperson who wants to go beyond study Bibles it should be just right. Alternating reading a few chapters from the Scripture in a good study translation like ESV and then reading the related commentary and interspersing the above with prayer seems like a pretty good way to study God's Word.

Haven't read the whole thing, but the introduction was quite helpfull, and Kidner gives a good explanation of the development of source criticism relating to Genesis.
