Overview

The Acts of the Apostles explores the story of the early church, from its inception in Jerusalem to its continued existence in the Roman Empire. The early church firmly believed that it was not a new religion, but the realization and fulfillment of Judaism. However, as the church lived out its mission as the fulfillment of its own religious heritage, it had to learn to reach beyond the comfortable boundaries of its own Jewish traditions. Central to the fulfillment of the hopes of Scripture was the incorporation of all persons, Jews and non-Jews, into the people of God. This commentary explores this important broadening of the mission of God and brings lessons for modern Christians to continue the expansion through obedience.

Top Highlights

“First, the community was devoted to the apostles’ teaching. Previous material in Acts allows readers to understand that this would have included scriptural (Old Testament) interpretation and gospel proclamation.” (Page 59)

“Philip’s witness of the gospel, ‘outsiders’ are invited to participate fully in the worship of God. Whether people live under the oppression of darkness or exclusivism, the gospel offers liberation from the forces that enslave and alienate.” (Page 139)

“The twofold result of such repentance and initiation into the restored people of God is forgiveness of sins and receipt of the Holy Spirit.” (Page 58)

“Second, the community was devoted to ‘fellowship’ (v. 42). At the root of the word koinōnia is the idea of sharing” (Page 59)

“More realistically, the apostles were carried out and returned to the temple when their wounds had healed.” (Page 97)
