Overview

The Secret of the Rosary is St. Louis de Montfort’s famous book about the power of the rosary. Broken up into sections (or “Roses”), each meditation is intended to be read with a devotion for each bead on the rosary. Every “Rose” provides a story or insight to the rosary or prayer in general, giving readers the tools they need to fight distractions and focus on mysteries of the rosary. There are sections for priests, laypeople, and the religious devout.

“But it was only in the year 1214, however, that Holy Mother Church received the Rosary in its present form and according to the method we use today. It was given to the Church by Saint Dominic who had received it from the Blessed Virgin as a powerful means of converting the Albigensians and other sinners.” (Page 17)

“It is not just a conglomeration of Our Fathers and Hail Marys, but on the contrary it is a divine summary of the mysteries of the life, passion, death and glory of Jesus and Mary.” (Page 8)

“far from hindering your other devotions, it will maintain and perfect them.” (Page 12)

“When we honor Our Lady: God the Father is glorified because we are honoring the most perfect of His creatures; God the Son is glorified because we are praising His most pure Mother, and God the Holy Spirit is glorified because we are lost in admiration at the graces with which He has filled His Spouse.” (Page 61)

“My son, it is good to preach; but there is always a danger of looking for praise rather than the salvation of souls.” (Page 21)

St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort (31 January 1673 – 28 April 1716) was canonized in 1947. He was a French priest and known in his time as a preacher and author, whose books, still widely read, have influenced a number of popes. He is considered as one of the early proponents of the field of Mariology as it is known today, and a candidate to become a Doctor of the Church.
