Overview

The Secret of Success in Christian Life and Christian Work is Moody’s exploration of Matthew 28:19–20. As he notes in the preface, “If we would work, ‘not as one that beateth the air,’ but to some definite purpose, we must have this power from on high. Without this power, our work will be drudgery. With it, it becomes a joyful task, a refreshing service.”

About Dwight Lyman Moody

Dwight Lyman Moody (1837–1899) was born in Northfield, Mass. His father died soon after, and Moody was forced to work to support the family at an early age. In 1854, Moody took a job at his uncle’s shoe store and one of the conditions upon employment was that he should regularly attend his uncle’s church. It was at this church where his conversion took place. He moved to Chicago in 1856, and after working as a successful Sunday-school teacher and building a membership of 1,500 pupils, the Illinois Street Church was formed. He then began his revival work, which would become his life-long endeavor.

Beginning in 1872, Moody would travel and preach in Great Britain, winning the esteem of many prominent evangelicals. When he returned to America, he had invitations all over the country for speaking engagements. For the next 20 years, Moody would travel the globe, packing churches and revival halls with those wanting to hear him preach. He was honest, preached a Calvinistic creed which he accepted with all his heart, and was a master of an effective style. During all of his travels, he found time to write and publish numerous works.

Moody was also known for the educational institutions he started. The Illinois Street Church he started was later renamed in his honor to Moody Church. In 1886, Moody established the Chicago Evangelization Society for the education and training of Christian workers. This institution was renamed the Moody Bible Institute in his honor after he passed away in 1899.

“The first work of the Spirit is to give life; spiritual life. He gives it and He sustains it. If there is no life, there can be no power; Solomon says: ‘A living dog is better than a dead lion.’ When the Spirit imparts this life, He does not leave us to droop and die, but constantly fans the flame. He is ever with us. Surely we ought not to be ignorant of His power and his work.” (Page 10)

“If you ask do I understand what is thus revealed in Scripture, I say ‘no.’ But my faith bows down before the inspired Word and I unhesitatingly believe the great things of God when even reason is blinded and the intellect confused.” (Page 11)

“It has been remarked that the Father plans, the Son executes, and the Holy Spirit applies.” (Page 10)

“The Gospel proclamation can not be divorced from the Holy Spirit. Unless He attend the word in power, vain will be the attempt in preaching it. Human eloquence or persuasiveness of speech are the mere trappings of the dead, if the living Spirit be absent; the prophet may preach to the bones in the valley, but it must be the breath from Heaven which will cause the slain to live.” (Page 13)

“The Holy Spirit has all the qualities belonging to a person; the power to understand, to will, to do, to call, to feel, to love. This can not be said of a mere influence. He possesses attributes and qualities which can only be ascribed to a person, as acts and deeds are performed by Him which can not be performed by a machine, an influence, or a result.” (Page 12)

Dwight L. Moody

Dwight Lyman Moody (1837–1899) is considered one of the nineteenth century’s greatest evangelists. After moving to Chicago in 1856, Moody began a Sunday School class, the attendance of which quickly grew to over 1,500. This growth allowed Moody to form the Illinois Street Church.

As Moody traveled to preach in Great Britain, he began winning the esteem of many prominent evangelicals. For the next 20 years, Moody traveled the world, speaking, preaching, and finding time to write as well. In 1886, Moody established the Chicago Evangelization Society (later renamed the Moody Bible Institute) to educate and train Christian workers.

The Works of Dwight L. Moody (26 vols.) contains hundreds of his sermons and addresses, plus his works on heaven, grace, prayer, the 10 Commandments, Christian living, and biblical characters. He is also the author of Arrows and Anecdotes, included in Goodly Heritage Library: Shelf Two.
