Top Highlights

What comes into our mind when we think about God is the most important thing about us” (source)

“Sheep were permitted in the agricultural fields of Bethlehem when the wheat harvest was completed as their bodily functions served to provide needed fertilizer for the next year’s crop.” (source)

“For a first-century Jew, to repent was to ‘fundamentally change the way you see and understand everything” (source)

“To a Hebrew, what a person says is not as important as what he does. A Hebrew knows everyone has two sets of beliefs: the one he or she espouses, and the one he or she lives out. Thus, how a person acts is the litmus test that truly reveals what he or she truly thinks, feels and values. As a result, a Hebrew would never even ask, ‘Do you love your neighbor?’ Rather, he would follow that man around for a while, and observe dozens of interactions between the man and his neighbor(s); then he would know the true answer to that question. He would also learn much more, e.g., who this man considers his neighbor(s) to be.” (source)

“The Tyrian (from Tyre) coins contained the highest silver content of all the coins being used by pilgrims throughout the Jewish Diaspora of that time. Craftily, the Sadducean ‘Board of Directors’ of Temple, Inc. decided that the only half-shekel coin they would permit to be used to pay each Jew’s annual Temple tax (for a month prior to Passover and twenty days thereafter) would be Tyrian half-sheckels.” (source)

This is a good book, especially for those relatively new to Bible Study and want to get into things a bit more. The author has a reasonably good educational and encouraging approach - though I did find at times that he seems to assume that he is always teaching his reader something "new". As a preacher for almost 40 years, I must say that there was very little "new" I found - and in fact most times I agreed with his interpretation. But it is still good to see a lot of this in print. His in-depth coverage of the Parable of the Prodigal Son is very worthwhile - and the strong encouragement to learn context is welcomed. The Reflections at the end of each chapter are quite useful - and could easily be the basis for a Group Bible Study - in fact this book would be quite a worthwhile one to do a Bible Study around. I would caution the confidence that the Author places in his understanding of First Century Judaism, as I don't think it is as "straight forward" as he likes to portray it and seems to be more akin to Rabbinic Judaism of centuries later.
