Overview

When he left the Thessalonians to share the gospel elsewhere, the apostle Paul feared that these Christians would be overwhelmed by false teachers, persecution, and temptations. He wrote two letters to encourage them to remain faithful. These letters offer rich hope and remain good reading for Christians faced with challenges to their faith.

Many people have found The People’s Bible to be the most reliable Bible commentary series published. It’s the laypeople’s Bible—down to earth, clearly written, easy to read and understand, filled with practical and contemporary applications. The Christ-centered commentary follows the Scripture sections containing explanations of the text, historical background, maps, illustrations, and archaeological information.

The People’s Bible commentaries are great for personal or group study.

“Let’s not just say, ‘I’m so sorry!’ Unbelievers can also say this kind of thing in their hopeless grief. How much more comforting it is to hear again and again from the lips of fellow believers the simple facts about the dead in Christ and the coming of our Lord: Christ rose and promises us we will rise also; death is but a sleep from which Christ himself will wake us; at his coming all believers will be reunited to meet with Christ and live with him forever.” (Pages 49–50)

“He would be particularly responsible for the apostasy, or falling away, because he would be a powerful and influential leader who would presume to take the place of Christ. Thus he is often referred to as the Antichrist. Since he tries to take the place of Christ and leads people away from Christ, his fate is sealed. He is ‘doomed to destruction.’” (Page 89)

“In verse 7 we will come to the statement by Paul that it was a person who was holding the Antichrist back. But here Paul says it was a thing (neuter) holding back the Antichrist. That ‘thing,’ which was a matter of common knowledge to the Thessalonians, was the Word of God and the believers’ love for that Word.” (Page 93)

“Thessalonica was a large and important city of the Roman Empire. It had a population close to two hundred thousand. It was a leading city of the Roman province of Macedonia and thus a place in which Roman officials lived. Most important, it was located at a strategic point in the middle of the Roman Empire.” (Pages vi–1)

“When Paul speaks of Christ coming ‘with all his holy ones,’ this simply refers to all those believers who have died and whose souls are with Christ in paradise.” (Page 37)
