The higher Abbé Guettée rose in the Roman Catholic Church, the less he agreed with the papacy. After converting to Orthodoxy, Guettée wrote The Papacy to refute the papacy’s claims to both infallibility and supremacy. Guettée argued that the origins of the papacy were based on dubious claims and accused the Roman See of misconstruing Scripture to establish them. About Wladimir Guettée

Abbé Vladimir Guettée (1816–1892) was a French historian and Roman Catholic priest who converted to Orthodoxy and became known as Father Vladimir. Early in his writing career, Guettée’s works clashed with the Roman Catholic Church, and he eventually saw how they aligned with the Greek Orthodox Church. His other work includes History of the Church in France, which conflicted with the Jesuit Order and led to his rejection of the Catholic Church.

Arthur Cleveland Coxe (1818–1896) was the second Episcopal bishop of Western New York. He is the author of The Criterion, Apollos, or the Way of God, and The Institutes of Christian History.
