About Dwight Lyman Moody

Dwight Lyman Moody (1837–1899) was born in Northfield, Mass. His father died soon after, and Moody was forced to work to support the family at an early age. In 1854, Moody took a job at his uncle’s shoe store and one of the conditions upon employment was that he should regularly attend his uncle’s church. It was at this church where his conversion took place. He moved to Chicago in 1856, and after working as a successful Sunday-school teacher and building a membership of 1,500 pupils, the Illinois Street Church was formed. He then began his revival work, which would become his life-long endeavor.

Beginning in 1872, Moody would travel and preach in Great Britain, winning the esteem of many prominent evangelicals. When he returned to America, he had invitations all over the country for speaking engagements. For the next 20 years, Moody would travel the globe, packing churches and revival halls with those wanting to hear him preach. He was honest, preached a Calvinistic creed which he accepted with all his heart, and was a master of an effective style. During all of his travels, he found time to write and publish numerous works.

Moody was also known for the educational institutions he started. The Illinois Street Church he started was later renamed in his honor to Moody Church. In 1886, Moody established the Chicago Evangelization Society for the education and training of Christian workers. This institution was renamed the Moody Bible Institute in his honor after he passed away in 1899.

“Jesus Christ makes no mistake of that kind. When He enlists a man in His service, He shows him the dark side; He lets him know that he must live a life of self denial. If a man is not willing to go to heaven by the way of Calvary, he cannot go at all. Many men want a religion in which there is no cross, but they cannot enter heaven that way. If we are to be disciples of Jesus Christ, we must deny ourselves and take up our cross and follow Him. So let us sit down and count the cost. Do not think that you will have no battles if you follow the Nazarene, because many battles are before you.” (Pages 12–13)

“‘Whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?’” (Page 5)

“The reason why so many Christians fail all through life is just this—they under-estimate the strength of the enemy” (Page 13)

“The next thing is contrition, deep Godly sorrow and humiliation of heart because of sin. If there is not true contrition, a man will turn right back into the old sin. That is the trouble with many Christians.” (Pages 44–45)

“Jacob was a man who walked with God by sight. You remember his vow at Bethel:—‘If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, so that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the Lord be my God.’ And you remember how his heart revived when he saw the wagons Joseph sent him from Egypt. He sought after signs. He never could have gone through the temptations and trials that his son Joseph did. Joseph represents a higher type of Christian. He could walk in the dark. He could survive thirteen years of misfortune, in spite of his dreams, and then ascribe it all to the goodness and providence of God.” (Page 11)

Dwight L. Moody

Dwight Lyman Moody (1837–1899) is considered one of the nineteenth century’s greatest evangelists. After moving to Chicago in 1856, Moody began a Sunday School class, the attendance of which quickly grew to over 1,500. This growth allowed Moody to form the Illinois Street Church.

As Moody traveled to preach in Great Britain, he began winning the esteem of many prominent evangelicals. For the next 20 years, Moody traveled the world, speaking, preaching, and finding time to write as well. In 1886, Moody established the Chicago Evangelization Society (later renamed the Moody Bible Institute) to educate and train Christian workers.

The Works of Dwight L. Moody (26 vols.) contains hundreds of his sermons and addresses, plus his works on heaven, grace, prayer, the 10 Commandments, Christian living, and biblical characters. He is also the author of Arrows and Anecdotes, included in Goodly Heritage Library: Shelf Two.
