Overview

Ironside’s five addresses on the work of the Holy Spirit are rooted in Christ’s promise that he would send a Comforter to accomplish Christ’s work throughout the world and into the present. Ironside distinguishes the Spirit’s work from emotion or ecstasy—the presence of the Spirit does not constitute merely a subjective encounter, but rather an active regeneration and a continuation of Christ’s work into the lives of present believers. As in all of Ironside’s sermons, these addresses on the Holy Spirit blur the line between sermonizing and storytelling, making them an accessible introduction to the work of the Holy Spirit.

“What then is the sin that the Holy Spirit principally brings before the mind of men? Our Lord tells us, ‘Of sin, because they believe not on Me.’ This is the one great damning sin—the one sin which, if unrepented of, shuts the door of heaven in a man’s face.” (Page 6)

“If you persist in refusing to trust the Saviour, you must be devoted to judgment at the coming of the Lord.” (Page 10)

“The word is really a legal term. It has to do with the presentation of evidence that conveys with it the proof of wrong-doing. The Spirit of God comes to bring to bear upon the minds and consciences of men the great wrong they are doing to God by sinning against Him.” (Page 4)

“the first of these important terms. It is the word ‘Reckon,’ and you will find it in verse 11, ‘Likewise reckon” (Page 44)

“We are only filled with the Spirit as we yield ourselves to God and walk in obedience to His word.” (Page 43)

Harry A. Ironside

H. A. Ironside (1876–1951) is one of the twentieth century’s greatest preachers. He has received honorary degrees from Wheaton College and Bob Jones University and was frequently invited to lecture at Dallas Theological Seminary.

After a serving as a Salvation Army officer for a brief period, Ironside joined the Plymouth Brethren and started what would become a highly successful itinerant ministry of preaching and teaching. He served as pastor at Moody Memorial Church from 1930 to 1948, and preached more than 7,000 sermons during his lifetime.

Harry A. Ironside produced close to 100 major books and pamphlets, mainly on expository and prophetic themes. He was a major figure in the popularizing of dispensationalism among American evangelicals and for the most part followed the views of the Scofield Reference Bible. Ironsides first-edition commentaries, most-loved sermons, addresses, lectures, and tracts are available in The Works of H. A. Ironside (65 vols.).
