Top Highlights

“The theme is the victory of Christ and of His Church over the dragon (Satan) and his helpers. The Apocalypse is meant to show us that things are not what they seem.” (Page 8)

“In short, the theme of this book is stated most gloriously and completely in these words: ‘These shall war against the Lamb, and the Lamb shall conquer them, for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings; and they also shall conquer that are with him called and chosen and faithful’ (17:14).” (Page 9)

“In the main, the purpose of the book of Revelation is to comfort the militant Church in its struggle against the forces of evil. It is full of help and comfort for persecuted and suffering Christians. To them is given the assurance that God sees their tears (7:17; 21:4); their prayers are influential in world affairs (8:3, 4) and their death is precious in His sight. Their final victory is assured (15:2); their blood will be avenged (19:2); their Christ lives and reigns for ever and for ever. He governs the world in the interest of His Church (5:7, 8). He is coming again to take His people to Himself in ‘the marriage supper of the Lamb’ and to live with them for ever in a rejuvenated universe (21:22).” (Page 7)

“The epistles describe conditions which occur not in one particular age of Church history, but again and again.” (Page 60)

“Throughout the prophecies of this wonderful book Christ is pictured as the Victor, the Conqueror (1:18; 2:8; 5:9 ff.; 6:2; 11:15; 12:9 ff.; 14:1, 14; 15:2 ff.; 19:16; 20:4; 22:3). He conquers death, Hades, the dragon, the beast, the false prophet, and the men who worship the beast. He is victorious; as a result, so are we, even when we seem to be hopelessly defeated.” (Page 8)

A shorter book than some, but I feel he displays a better understanding of Revelation than most.

When seeking to prove Amillennialism wrong, I was rebuked by the Scripture use and God-supplied basic logic of a book like this. At times it is not as thorough as I'd like it to be, yet it most certainly does the job and then-some. (Others recommend Beale for more technical info.) And I also disagree where he deviates slightly from the KJV tradition in regards to his own translation. Additional excellent works on Logos: Riddlebarger: "A Case for Amillennialism, Expanded Edition: Understanding the End Times" & "The Man of Sin: Uncovering the Truth about the Antichrist" Beale: "Revelation: A Shorter Commentary" apparently abridged from: "The Book of Revelation (The New International Greek Testament Commentary | NIGTC)" Outside of Logos: Hoeksema: "Behold, He Cometh!: An Exposition of the Book of Revelation" Engelsma: "Christ's Spiritual Kingdom: A Defense of Reformed Amillennialism" (And I'm looking forward to his: "The Church's Hope: The Reformed Doctrine of the End".)

A marvellous book which gave me many new insights into the interpretation of the book of Revelation. Normally, I was more aware of the literal and historical interpretations of the final book of Sacred Scriptures, so for me, this book was an extremely refreshing book to read. Throughout the book, the author shows also the Biblical interpretations he disagrees with. This gives the reader a more complete picture of different standpoints concerning a topic. Another good point is his clear writing style supported with many footnotes to make solid claims. Then some points he presents, are for me personally at this moment not in line with what I personally believe. I say this since many Christians have a completely different view of what Revelation is about, then what Hendriksen presents in this book. Nevertheless, he still is able to produce a compelling trail of arguments to fit the book of Revelation perfectly into the Bible as a whole.

Whether you agree with Hendriksen's conclusions, this is a must read. The introduction of this book is worth the price of the book.
