Overview

First published in 1585, The Marks of God’s Children by Jean Taffin became an instant classic in Dutch and French Reformed circles. Taffin offers comfort and encouragement to those engaged in spiritual warfare. Grounded in Reformed confessional orthodoxy, this spiritual reflection provides an astute understanding of the “marks” of God’s grace and salvation, and is still relevant today. This is experiential Christianity at its best.

Top Highlights

“The first mark is the pure preaching of God’s Word.” (Page 36)

“The third mark of the true church is addressing God in the name of Jesus Christ, and in his name alone” (Page 37)

“God wants to display his compassion in us by forgiving our sins, by enabling us to stand in his strength, and by delivering us by his truth. For him to achieve this it is essential that we walk in humility, for Augustine says no one is weaker than the proud and no one is stronger than the humble. The proud person, trusting in himself when he is no more than vanity, has God as his enemy, for God resists the proud.” (Page 55)

“Remember that the gospel you profess is not merely doctrine to be tucked away in your mind. It needs to live in your heart. Nor is it only to be talked about with the tongue but must be expressed in your behavior and actions.” (Page 136)

“The righteous God never sends us sufferings for any reason other than that we deserve them. This is how we should always feel and what we should always confess in order to stay humble and to honor God.” (Page 111)
