Poco es lo que sabemos del autor de una de las más extraordinarias y bien escritas obras devocionales de todos los tiempos: la famosa Escala espiritual. Se lo conoce por Clímaco en honor al título original griego de dicha obra, Klímax. A petición del abad del monasterio de Raitu, situado a orillas del mar Rojo, escribió en griego su Klímax tou Paradeison o Escala al Paraíso, conocida actualmente como Escala Espiritual, traducida al siriaco en el siglo VII, al árabe y eslavo en el siglo X, al latín en el siglo XII y al español en el siglo XVI, traducción publicada en México antes de 1540, a la que corresponde el honor de ser el primer libro impreso en América. Posteriormente escribió Peri tou poimene o El libro del Pastor. Este volumen, ahora disponible en Logos, incluye ambas obras: Escala al Paraíso, El libro del Pastor.

About John Climacus

Saint John Climacus (Ἰωάννης τῆς Κλίμακος c. 7th Century CE), also known as John of the Ladder, John Scholasticus and John Sinaites, was a 7th century Christian monk at the monastery on Mount Sinai. He is revered as a saint by the Roman Catholic, Oriental Orthodox, Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic churches. We have almost no information about John’s life. There is in existence an ancient Vita, Life of the saint by a monk named Daniel of Raithu monastery.
