Overview

Conflict and change are inevitable in community. In LD202, Dr. Irving takes a macro-level approach to leadership, considering questions of organizational purpose, mission, and identity. A variety of communication and leadership strategies are introduced, combined with biblically based principles, to help you face the challenges that are most likely to arise in your ministry or non-profit organization. This course identifies the right questions to ask in order to identify an organization’s mission, the appropriate strategies to get there, and how the Leadership Communication Pyramid can help create and support organizations that bring about lasting change. Using Scripture as a foundation for this communication and leadership work, LD202 is an invaluable aid for anyone who wants to help organizations function successfully.

Top Highlights

“We also have mentioned in some of our previous models the issue of noise and interference. Here we want to note that this noise can come in various forms, and we’ll begin here with the discussion of psychological noise and how that can influence the communication process.” (source)

“Now for Christian organizations who are thinking about their life as a church—or a nonprofit organization, a missions agency, some type of organization that’s approaching things from a Christian perspective—the issue of ultimate purpose and subordinate purpose should both be on the table. Why do we do what we do in terms of theological ends, and why do we do what we do in terms of anthropological ends?” (source)

“These broad categories of recognizing and responding to emotions both in myself and in others is part of what leaders need at that deep capacity level because we are leading in context with people who are whole individuals—people who have thoughts at the cognitive level, who have emotions at the deep affective level, and are spiritual beings as well. How will we engage them in all of those deep and abiding ways is a critical point of consideration—the physical and nonphysical dimensions of people’s lives. Emotional intelligence helps a leader to have the capacity to recognize and respond to the whole person in a leadership-oriented context. Building upon that foundation of who I am in Christ, building upon this element of capacity, we will next be transitioning into the area of competency.” (source)

“People need to understand: what is the picture, what’s the plan, what’s the future reality that we’re working toward, and are we offering some rationale for why that’s meaningful to the members of that community? So in this concept, here’s a plan: Let’s go under there for shelter, and we’ll also be able to meet some of our needs for lunch. How can we provide that simple understanding of vision and apply it in a broader scale? People need to know where are we heading and why are we going there? These are the key functions that vision serves for people, and we need to provide that as organizational leaders.” (source)
