Overview

Homer A. Kent Jr. offers practical, accessible exposition of the books of Colossians and Philemon. In this revised edition of his commentary—based on his own translation from the Greek—Kent works through each book verse by verse. His study addresses topics such as the spirit world, angels, the occult, human rights, and social discrimination. The end of each chapter also includes discussion questions, making this volume ideal for either group or personal study.

“Although the translation ‘for ye are dead’ (kjv) is well known, it is not the most accurate rendering of this statement. The verb form here does not name the present state but a past occurrence.4 A better translation is ‘for you died.’ In this context there can be little doubt that the reference is to the believer’s identification with Christ in His death at Calvary (2:20; 3:1). This event not only secured for believers the full satisfaction of God’s righteousness and the forgiveness of sins, but also served to sever the connection that had bound them as sinners to elementary religious teachings that characterize the world scene (2:20). That former life had left them under condemnation, and their only prospect was death.” (Page 119)

“Asceticism is the religious philosophy that teaches that depriving the physical body of its normal desires is a means of achieving greater holiness and approval from God. Such practices as fasting, celibacy, withdrawal from society, abandonment of possessions, and even self-flagellation are used in varying degrees.” (Page 104)

“Legalism is best understood as a spirit that fails to recognize that God’s grace has made us acceptable to Him, and that human works have no part in it. God’s grace has made believers into new creatures whose delight is to do out of love what pleases the Father.” (Page 101)

“This problem is resolved by recognizing that reconciliation is not equivalent to salvation. Rather, reconciliation refers to the removal of the barrier between God and man through Christ’s expiatory work so that God can deal with sinners in a new way.” (Page 47)
