Overview

In this study of Ephesians, Homer A. Kent Jr. addresses a question every generation faces: “What does church mean?” Kent’s verse-by-verse commentary includes a helpful introduction and outline, then offers accessible exposition of Paul’s teachings on the doctrine and duties of the church. He tackles topics such as the regeneration of believers, walking in unity, standing firm in spiritual conflict, and maintaining Christian relationships.

“Discipline implies training in proper conduct and chastening in times of failure. Instruction involves teaching, whether by praise, warning, censure, or explanation of principles.” (Page 118)

“At verse 4 Paul addresses ‘fathers’ in relation to their children. Although it is true that the same word is used sometimes in the sense of parents (e.g., Heb. 11:23), it is not likely that it is so used here, inasmuch as father was used in its usual sense just two verses earlier. The mention of fathers does not relieve mothers from acting as supervisors of their children also, but it does indicate that fathers, as heads of their households, are those on whom the ultimate responsibility for supervision rests.” (Page 117)

“This submission in verse 21 must not be explained as being in contradiction to the passage that follows. When Paul says that Christians should submit to one another, he does not mean, for example, that husbands and wives are to submit to each other, for that would render verse 22 meaningless and destroy the very pattern of authority that he is about to teach. Rather, he is exhorting against a spirit of self-exaltation by anyone in the church.” (Page 104)

“Christ in His own person who embodies our peace with God and between Jew and Gentile” (Page 38)

“It was God who long ago planned the good works He wanted us to perform.” (Page 33)
