“Paul’s point, however, is that this sort of pleasing conduct does not come about by placing people under the law, but by walking by the power of the Spirit.” (Page 163)

“the Galatians were allowing themselves to be swayed by this faulty doctrine” (Page 32)

“True Christians have ‘crucified the flesh.’ At conversion the believer made a radical break with the past. By accepting God’s verdict on sin and receiving by faith Christ’s work on his behalf, the sinner identified himself with Christ, and his fleshly nature was in effect nailed to the cross. Of course, the old nature can still harass him because until glorification occurs at death or at the Lord’s return the old nature still exists within the believer, but officially it has been crucified and has no more authority over the Christian. Elsewhere Paul urges Christians to ‘reckon’ themselves dead to sin (Rom. 6:11). It is only when we fail to listen to the Spirit and instead heed the stirrings of the old ‘passions and desires’ (NASB) that we fall into the works of the flesh.” (Page 163)

“A Jew who performed his ritual without faith in God was actually doing the same thing the pagan did—practicing religious acts of a ceremonial kind which had no efficacy per se.” (Page 118)

“contrast as between the old nature of man (‘flesh’) and the new nature controlled by the Holy Spirit.” (Page 156)
