Overview

Rev. Richard D. Phillips digs into the early chapters of the Gospel of John to discover principles you can use for Christian outreach that were modeled by witnesses for Jesus and by Jesus himself. Phillips unfolds biblical principles for evangelism by examining the ministry of John the Baptist and the calling of the first of Jesus’ disciples. Then, through a brief study of the Lord’s encounter with the Pharisee Nicodemus, he presents us with a theology of the gospel. Finally, he focuses in on Jesus’ stirring encounter with the Samaritan woman to show exactly how Christ shared the good news.

Phillips’ clear and concise handling of these key stories will both motivate and instruct you in your witness on behalf of Christ. An appendix looks at the relationship between God’s sovereignty and evangelism.

Top Highlights

“Christians have an equal need to believe on Jesus and His gospel. Faith in Christ is once for all in its effects, eternally reconciling a believer to God. But faith in Christ is not a once-for-all event. The greatest need of Christians is to exercise their faith in Christ—to make their belief not a mere assent but a living practice and habit.” (Page 17)

“His message was not about his experiences or what he felt about God, but about Jesus. When he saw Jesus, he declared, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’ (John 1:29). We, too, need to declare that Jesus saves people from their sins.” (Page 13)

“Do you count it an awesome privilege to serve Jesus in any way possible? Instead of begrudging your Christian duties and especially any actual sacrifice you are called to make, are you overwhelmed at the privilege of simply serving a glorious Lord like Him?” (Page 26)

“The prologue to John is loaded with key terms that introduce the themes of this Gospel. John 1:4–5 reveals three of them: life, light, and darkness. Another of these theme words appears in John 1:7: witness.” (Page 9)

“we should look for opportunities to talk not about the controversial teachings of the Bible, but about Jesus.” (Page 26)

Praise for the Print Edition

Richard D. Phillips’ Jesus the Evangelist is exactly what a paranoid and paralyzed church needs to hear in order to do the essential work of witnessing for Jesus Christ! In a day when so-called “practical” books are synonymous with fluffy books, here’s a solid, readable work for the “average Christian.”

—Rev. Thabiti Anyabwile, senior pastor, First Baptist Church of Grand Cayman

Richard Phillips has written a very helpful book that every serious Christian should read. Evangelism is not an afterthought in the Christian life. It is how God has ordained to glorify Himself in the salvation of sinners. Rev. Phillips explains this by showing how Jesus is both the evangel and the Great Evangelist. In the process, he challenges both apathy and superficiality in the great work of making disciples. I highly recommend this book.

—Dr. Thomas K. Ascol, senior pastor, Grace Baptist Church, Cape Coral, Fla., exectutive director, Founders Ministries
