Edwin T. Winkler (1823–1883) was educated at Brown University, Baylor University, and Newton Theological Institution. Ordained in 1846, Winkler became the minister of First Baptist Church in Charleston. He later served as a chaplain in the civil war, after which, he was conferred an honorary Doctorate of Divinity by Furman University.
