Overview

God tells you to love him with all your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself. But what attitude must you assume—and what steps must you take—to fulfill this essential commandment of your Christian walk? In Humility, C. Peter Wagner provides a fresh new perspective and a long overdue biblical teaching on this widely misunderstood requirement.

Wagner exhorts you to begin by walking humbly with God and then by practicing humility toward your fellow human beings. But as surely as it is God’s will for every believer to be humble, the choice to do so is squarely up to you. You can exalt yourself, and God will oppose your pride in his way and time, or you can put on the cloak of humility, stay close to his heart and finish life well.

Top Highlights

“that humility, just like holiness, needs both dimensions, the vertical and the horizontal, in order to be complete.” (Page 21)

“If you choose to exalt yourself (active), then, sooner or later, you will be humbled (passive).” (Page 12)

“ might say that the active takes human initiative, while the passive takes divine initiative” (Page 8)

“Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility’ (1 Pet. 5:5). This is an interesting metaphor. Being humble is, apparently, like getting dressed. Who puts your clothes on each morning? You do! You are not naked at this moment because you decided to put clothes on and you dressed yourself. In the same way, we all are supposed to be clothed with humility. It is the active verb again. We must decide to do it, and then do it!” (Page 10)

“Let’s do a quick review: If we choose to be humble (active) we end up exalted (passive). This combination has an interesting implication that we might not always think about. If we are, in fact, exalted, we must be humble. Why? If we were not humble, God would not have exalted us. Is this what the Bible says?” (Page 11)

C. Peter Wagner holds graduate degrees in theology, missiology, and religion from Fuller Theological Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary, and the University of Southern California.
