Top Highlights

“In all three clauses of the quotation, full expression is given to lamenting the hopeless fading, dying, being cut down. Israel, who in the events of the years 733/32, 722 and 597 was pushed further and further into disaster and defeat, sees herself finally sentenced to death in the event of 587. The concentration of the vision on the single image of the dried bones has fully grasped the basic element of this hopeless selfassertion on the part of the people.” (Page 262)

“Thus one must think beyond the mere revivification to the promise of the spirit in 36:27* (39:29*), by which also the inner transformation of the people comes about. This alone makes it possible for the first time that the old history of disaster in the land will not again be repeated.30 In this respect the oracle comes close to what was said in 36:16ff.” (Page 263)

“Against the background of these statements the immediate question that arises is this: Is this coming of Yahweh to his sanctuary once again a coming which will one day end in a new departure from the temple? In vv 7* and 9* Yahweh himself will answer this question.” (Page 413)

“The two main sections, vv 1–10* and vv 11–14*, thus stand in a relationship of image and interpretation” (Page 257)

“Thus, many Church Fathers found the final resurrection of the dead proclaimed here.35” (Page 264)
