  1. Jonathan Taube
Stein’s work begins with an overview of the history of Marcan studies, focusing especially on the development of the field of redaction criticism. He discusses the problems witnessed in that development honestly. With this he also introduces his goal for the work—to present an advisable methodology which will guard against such overreaching criticism and exegesis. His introductory chapter, in outlining that history and criticism of the field itself, presents a picture of the pursuit of the Marcan “setting in life” (sitz im leben). The facets through which this setting may be viewed is the source of some contention amongst scholars (e.g. does the process of translation of the gospel into written form predicate a sitz im leben on its own?). His historical summary, methodological suggestions, and general discussion of Marcan redaction criticism was very helpful to read. However, his work is incredibly dense (footnotes almost entirely in German kind of dense) and after the third chapter he spends a great deal of time dissecting Greek passages, so if you lack Greek and German language skills (like myself), know that much of this will be over your head. That's the real reason for my average rating.
