Overview

The Gospel of St. Luke was written by a gentile, for gentiles. Its purpose was to touch hearts with the good news of Christ, and it speaks especially to the poor and the marginalized of society—including women—with an emphasis on joy, healing, and prayer. Lawrence Farley expounds upon this beautiful account of the life and ministry of Christ for contemporary Christians. In The Gospel of Luke: Good News for the Poor, Farley works from a literal translation of the original Greek and examines Luke section by section, explaining its meaning in contemporary language.

Top Highlights

“He did not write his Gospel for the Church alone, but also as an apologia, a defense of the Faith, a commendation of the Church’s message and life to the world at large.” (Page 15)

“It is important to see that in forbidding the disciple to judge (Gr. krino), Christ is not calling for the suspension of the moral faculty. Christ is not saying that the disciple may not pronounce his enemies’ actions to be morally wrong—for how can one pardon a man if one does not recognize that there is something to pardon? Rather, Christ is forbidding His disciple to usurp the role of God and assign amounts of blame, as if the disciple could see into the secret heart to weigh motivation. The disciple’s task is not to give up on his adversary as a lost cause, but to continue to love and seek the person’s final repentance and eternal good.” (Page 144)

“Luke stressed that joy is the signature of the Kingdom of God, the sign that God is truly active in the world of men.” (Page 15)

“Luke uses the full apostolic name Simon Peter to show how this was Simon’s final acceptance of his apostolic calling” (Page 117)

“if he would do this (the verb do is here in the present tense, indicating a life of such love), then he would live” (Page 218)
