Overview

This theological primer lets the Bible tell its own message, providing a basic framework for Scripture that will encourage readers to take up the Bible for themselves and grow in faith, hope, and love. Based on the seasoned scholarship and incisive exegesis of Scott Hafemann, The God of Promise and the Life of Faith helps Christians better understand the power of the Bible’s message and readily grasp the meaning of God’s love for his people.

“There are therefore no ‘entrance requirements’ that must first be fulfilled before God will break into our lives.” (Page 209)

“Red Sea illustrates once again that faith is fueled by the awareness that God is the One who provides” (Page 79)

“This book, on the other hand, is motivated by the conviction that the message of the Bible provides the only answer to humanity’s most pressing need: to know God himself. Having been created by God for God, the ‘self’ can never be ‘self-satisfied.’ Yet, having lost sight of the God revealed in the Bible, all we can see is our self, with its futile drive to meet its own ever-changing but never satisfied cravings for the second-rate pleasures of this world.” (Page 20)

“In his sovereignty, God purposely forestalls the fulfillment of his promises because he wants to foster not only faith but also hope. Promises are given but only partially fulfilled so that faith will flourish into an abiding confidence for the future. God instills hope in the hearts of his people by revealing enough of himself to sustain faith but not so much that faith’s focus on the future is no longer necessary.” (Pages 116–117)

“The real terror and consequence of judgment is not falling into the hands of an angry God but falling out of his presence, to be left alone with our own half-filled hearts.” (Page 38)

He was also Assistant Professor of New Testament at Taylor University and Visiting Assistant Professor of New Testament at Saint John’s University. Dr. Hafemann serves as President of Mission: Chad, a Christian ministry supporting the orphan rescue-work and theological education of the churches of Chad, where he also regularly teaches at Shalom Evangelical School of Theology. He is also active teaching in Bible colleges and seminaries in the majority world. Besides Chad, he has taught most recently in Greece, Croatia and India. Commentaries on
