Top Highlights

“Finally, Christ is uniquely suited to be our Advocate because he is the propitiation for our sins (verse 2a).” (Page 38)

“The penalty of living in the darkness is not merely that one does not see, but that one goes blind’ (Smith, p. 176). Hatred robs us of all spiritual insight. It blinds us to the virtues of others, the faults in ourselves, and the peril which awaits us if we persist in this course of life.” (Page 48)

“This is defined as ‘the lust of the flesh,’ ‘the lust of the eyes,’ and ‘the pride of life.’ This ‘trinity of evil’ is literally all that the world has to offer. It is not in its power to give anything nobler or better.” (Page 54)

“There is, however, this difference: ‘the Word was made flesh’ focuses on the Incarnation as a historic event. ‘The life was manifested’ suggests the unfolding of Christ’s incarnate life.” (Page 23)

“Still a third group of scholars holds (correctly, we believe) that the epistle was written about the same time as the gospel and sent along with the gospel as a companion writing.” (Page 10)
