Overview

Understanding the doctrines of grace will give you a clearer picture of God’s sovereignty. From the lawgiver Moses to the apostle John, and from the early church fathers to modern defenders of the faith, there has marched onto the stage of human history a long line of godly men, a triumphant parade of spiritual stalwarts who have upheld the doctrines of grace. In Foundations of Grace, the first in the three-volume A Long Line of Godly Men series, Dr. Steven J. Lawson takes you on a heart-stirring survey of the Scriptures to show that the Bible in its entirety teaches the doctrines of grace.

With the Logos edition, Foundations of Grace is fully integrated with the other resources in your digital library, including Bibles, maps, dictionaries, and numerous other Bible study tools. All Scripture references are linked directly to the text of your favorite Bible translation, making your Bible study and teaching preparations more effective and rewarding. You can also explore Scripture on a deeper level with powerful search features, Passage Guides, and all the other interactive features in your Logos library. That makes this important book more useful than ever before for pastors, teachers, Bible study leaders, and anyone else desiring to get deeper into the truth of God’s Word.

Top Highlights

“While God sovereignly regulates all that occurs in history, including the choices and actions of human beings, all humans use their volition to choose what they fully intend to carry out. They intend. They choose. They act. Yet, in and through all this, God’s will is performed, not frustrated. As Joseph states so clearly in Genesis 50:20 regarding the responsible actions of his brothers, ‘You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good.’ God is sovereign in and through the free actions we perform and for which we bear responsibility. The Bible everywhere affirms this, and so we believe.’8 God is sovereign over all!” (Page 53)

“The first main heading of the doctrines of grace is total depravity, or radical depravity.” (Page 34)

“The third heading is limited atonement, or definite atonement” (Page 34)

“He had watched Eve take the fruit, and nothing happened to her. He sinned willfully, assuming there would be no consequences. Everything was upside down. Eve followed the snake, Adam followed Eve, and no one followed God.’10 It was clear man would not submit to the sovereignty of God.” (Page 54)

“it misunderstands the way in which Peter uses the term foreknowledge” (Pages 10–11)

Praise for the Print Edition

As Dr. Steve Lawson’s reconnaissance of this matter so clearly shows, God’s sovereignty is manifest throughout sacred Scripture. . . . When you finish reading this book, I would wonder and worry if you continue to persist in denying the full measure of God’s sovereignty in our salvation.

—Dr. R. C. Sproul, minister of preaching and teaching, Saint Andrew’s Chapel, Sanford, Fla.

The doctrines of grace are often misunderstood and mischaracterized. This helpful new book explains them thoughtfully and well. May God use it for His glory and others’ good.

—Dr. D. James Kennedy, senior minister, Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Steve Lawson understands that the text of the Bible presents a consistent witness to God’s sovereignty and the panoramic display of God’s glory. All this is evident in his preaching ministry and in his writing ministry as well.

—R. Albert Mohler Jr., president, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Steven Lawson clearly and comprehensively lays the scriptural groundwork for the doctrines of grace.

—Dr. John MacArthur, pastor-teacher, Grace Community Church, Sun Valley, Calif.

Gripped in mind and heart by the twin truths of God’s total sovereignty and His amazing grace, Steve Lawson compellingly traces these themes from the beginning to the end of Scripture. . . . Foundations of Grace shows, in a multitude of ways, that the Scriptures are useful ‘for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness.

—Dr. Sinclair B. Ferguson, senior pastor, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, S.C.

As Dr Lawson goes through the entire bible, he identifies and explains each verse that applies to the 5 Doctrines of Grace (TULIP) as well as to the biblical topics of Divine Sovereignty and Divine Reprobation. RC Sproul better defined TULIP using RSLEP and I think Dr. Lawson further improves on it with RSDIP (Radical Depravity, Sovereign Election, Definite Atonement, Irresistible Call, Preserving Grace). Don't hold me to it but I ballpark counted 154 bible proof texts for Radical Depravity, 69 for Sovereign Election, 67 for Definite Atonement, 89 for Irresistible Call, and 70 for Preserving Grace. Dr Lawson also gives about 58 proof texts for Divine Sovereignty and about 21 for Divine Reprobation. This book provides a "God-centered, Christ-exalting way of viewing salvation which is evident throughout the entire Bible" by identifying and explaining the Doctrines of Grace.
