Overview

Sermons use words. And though it appears obvious that preachers should be careful and exacting in word choice, novice preachers often set aside this aspect of preaching in favor of exegetical work and sermonic focus. Nonetheless preachers subscribe to preaching aids, peruse preaching websites, and purchase annuals of sermon illustrations in order to adorn their sermons with apt imagery. Preachers look for other‘s words to amplify their own. The weekly work with language is daunting: Preachers must be disciplined to find fresh phrases for sermons and to make good choices about their own words and those borrowed from others as language shapes faith. This volume introduces the power of language to determine reality, the intricacies of language issues for preaching, and the custodial task of preachers for this work.

The Reverend Doctor Jennifer L. Lord, Associate Professor of Homiletics and Dean of the Chapel at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, is a Presbyterian minister who served congregations in New York State before joining the seminary faculty. She holds a B.A. from Alboin College, a M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. She places her work at the intersection of homiletical theory and liturgical theology. Interest in ritual studies, performance theory, and creative processes for preaching supplement her work on preaching as a liturgical act. Current interests and course offerings are in the areas of preaching and the sacraments; women, authority, and voice in preaching; preaching and the Revised Common Lectionary; metaphor studies; and creative processes in sermon preparation. She is working on Introduction to Preaching the Revised Common Lectionary: Texts to Sermon for Westminster John Knox, a book project examining the liturgical and homiletical tasks involved with preaching from the RCL. Her book Finding Language and Imagery: Words for Holy Speech (Fortress Press, Elements of Preaching Series) is forthcoming spring, 2009. She is a contributing author for the New Interpreters Bible Handbook of Preaching (Abingdon, 2008); New Proclamation on Feasts, Holy Days and Other Celebrations (Augsburg Fortress, 2007); Best Advice for Pastors and Preachers (Westminster John Knox, forthcoming 2008, William Carl, ed.); Feasting on the Word (Westminster John Knox); and journals Worship and Call to Worship. Prior to her appointment at Austin Seminary she was Assistant Professor of Worship and Preaching at Lancaster Theological Seminary, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She travels nationally as a conference leader, consultant, and liturgist/preacher.
